Bricks

by Joel Gaines

“Church” is kind of a funny word. The concept of church in our thoughts is usually a building such as a school or hospital. But the Bible makes it clear that people are the church. I don't mean that we are a part of the church…we are the church. Any person God has rescued and made a part of his family is considered the church. But often we consider church as a building we go to.

My first memory of church involves the destruction of it. I can remember at four years old being curious about what would happen if I threw a brick at a stained glass window. I found out that a window breaks when you throw a heavy object into it. I also discovered that day what a spanking was like. My next church memory involves my father, “the preacher”, quieting my brother and I down during one of his famous 90 minute Sunday night services. When the look came our direction we knew that again the joy of a spanking would follow. Finally, as a teenager I can remember the guilt of coming to church hung over from the night before, hoping I wouldn’t be found out. Lets just say I have not had many good experiences going to church.

So, why start a church? The answer is simple: to break stained glass windows. Church for me has always been boring, frustrating, unloving, and irrelevant. I feel that those who are frustrated with "church" can choose either to leave it and never go, or make it better.

Mosaic is not just your ordinary church. In fact we really haven't had our first service yet. But we know what we want to see happen. We want to see people come and question. Doubts, skepticism, questions, and differing opinions are not just welcomed they are encouraged. We want to smash stained glass windows by providing an open learning environment. We want to struggle with you and learn from you. We don't know all the answers, we just know the God who does. We want you to be a part of breaking stained glass windows of tradition and feeling open to question. So come AND be ready to get real.

We desire for you to become the church. Again, not a building, but a part of God's movement of people to bring hope to the world. Asking questions is great. Like I said, we encourage it. But don't be like the person who always asks for directions but never takes the first step. We want you to discover the one place we have found hope. Tradition tells us once we are apart of the church we must look the part, speak the part, vote the part, and be better than the rest. Again we want to arm you with bricks. We believe that inward change is what God cares about. We believe that we are just as messed up as everyone else is. We want to arm you with bricks of love for God and love for all people, not just insiders.

Our desire at Mosaic is that you not just to be the church, we want you to do something. The majority of churches I’ve been to only 10 percent of the people actually do something. God wants to equip you with all kinds of talents and desires to do something for the hope movement Jesus started. The cool thing is that God does not limit you as to what that is, neither do we. We want you to break stained glass windows by discovering what God has equipped you to do and help you do it. We don't care where, what, or how much it costs…if God believes in you so do we.

At Mosaic we are already breaking the stain glass windows of intolerance, better-than-you attitudes, and irrelevant speeches. Come join us… we’ll provide the bricks.
